  10. THINGS YOU MUST KNOW, READ AT LEAST THE NEXT FEW PARAGRAPHS!

  12.  The  file you are reading is displayed automatically during
  13. the  installation process.  It can also be viewed at a later
  14. time.   This file, read_me.txt, and other documentation  are
  15. found  in  the  directory/folder that the screen  saver  was
  16. installed  into.   The  default  installation  directory  is
  17. "Program Files\Via Nova\3D Objects Screen Saver I", although
  18. this  could  have  been changed by the person  who  did  the
  19. installation.   The  section  below  titled  "Documentation"
  20. describes how to get to the "Help" file.
  21.  
  22.  Our  Web  address is http://www.vianova.com/~vianova.   You
  23. may  have  an  older version, our Web site  has  the  LATEST
  24. VERSION  of this screen saver and contact information.   The
  25. screen  saver produces several different screens.   You  can
  26. configure  each  screen for color of 3D objects,  background
  27. color,  movement  type,  speed of momement,  delays  between
  28. drawings, the characters in the text that appears,  size  of
  29. 3D   objects,   lighting,  fog  effects,  and   many   other
  30. characteristics.  The speed with which objects move  can  be
  31. made faster or slower by modifying delay values, the size of
  32. the  object, or the amount it moves each time it  is  drawn.
  33. You  can disable the displaying of any screen you don't want
  34. to  see,  or  show multiple screens in succession  when  the
  35. screen  saver is activated.  The default is to show multiple
  36. screens  each time the screen saver is activated.   You  can
  37. change  this  to  show only 1 screen if  you  desire.   When
  38. multiple  screens  are being shown, you configure  how  long
  39. each screen is shown.  When the screen saver is activated it
  40. will  display the Via Nova building for a few seconds before
  41. displaying the different screens.  The number of seconds the
  42. Via Nova building is displayed can be varied, or it call  be
  43. elimated.  The price (quanity 1) is $23 = $20 + $3 handling.
  44. This  program will generate an order form for you, YOU  MUST
  45. READ  THE  Help  FILE UNDER Registration WHEN  YOU  WANT  TO
  46. REGISTER.  No matter how you register, using Compuser or any
  47. other  means,  YOU MUST STILL SEND IN THE  ORDER  FORM.   It
  48. contains  a  computer  ID  that  we  use  to  generate  your
  49. password.  Our contact information is in the "Help" file and
  50. in the "About" box of the application.  You only have to use
  51. "Control  Panel" to select the screen saver and specify  the
  52. timeout period.  When you want to do anything else, such  as
  53. configure  the  screen  saver,  execute  the  screen   saver
  54. manually,  generate the order form, or look at  the  "About"
  55. box USE THE FOLLOWING PRODECURE:

  59. 1.Go to the Via Nova program group in Program Manger.
  60. 2.Double-click on one of the screen saver icons.

  66. 3.Select "Via Nova".
  67. 4.Select one of the screen saver entries.

  69.  If  you  redistribute  this application,  you  must  do  so
  70. unmodified and with all the original files.  See the License

  73. OVERVIEW
  74.  
  75.  Cool  3D  screen saver pack draws 68 different  screens  in
  76. succession.  Draws predefined true 3D objects which  can  be
  77. animated   according   to   user   configuration.    Several
  78. predefined  objects include colorful 3D:  text,  spacecraft,
  79. teapot, geometric objects, and building.  Configuration also
  80. includes  options  for  color choice  and  smooth  vs.  flat
  81. shading, light position, and others.  Can be used as  stand-
  82. alone  application to experiment with configurations, or  to
  83. run demonstrations, or to display 3D text.  In this mode you
  84. can  create images using the predefined 3D objects and  then
  85. watch  them be animated.  This screen saver was designed  to
  86. provide  animation on a computer in the  speed  range  of  a
  87. 33MHz  486,  especially  awesome on faster  machines.   Uses
  88. Microsoft's  version of OpenGL, a high  quality  3D  drawing
  89. package.   For  Microsoft Windows 95 and Intel  versions  of
  90. Windows   NT  3.51  or  better.   This  screen  saver   will
  91. automatically  use  any  OpenGL graphics  accelerator  board
  92. which  is  available  on  the  system.   Easy  install   and

  95. Shareware,   registering  gets  update   notification,   and
  96. technical support.  Animated 3D Objects Screen Saver I  (TM)
  97. developed by Via Nova (TM). The default configurations  were
  98. designed  assuming a 33MHz 486 computer, and can be improved
  99. if you have a faster one.

  101. REGISTRATION
  102.  
  103.  The price (quanity 1) is $23 = $20 + $3 handling.

  105.  After  the  screen saver is installed it will operate  with
  106. partial  functionality.  A 3D object will  be  drawn  a  few
  107. times and then a registration reminder will be displayed.  A
  108. password supplied by Via Nova will allow full functionality.
  109. The "Help" file describes the registration process.

  111. REQUIREMENTS
  112.  
  113.  Requires  Windows  NT 3.51 or later,  or  Windows  95.   If
  114. OpenGL  is  not present this package will install OpenGL  on
  115. your  Windows  95  system.   The  screen  saver  requires  1
  116. megabyte of disk space once installed.  The install  program
  117. will also require some disk space during the installation.

  119. DOCUMENTATION TERMS
  120.  
  121.  The following terms are used in this document.
  122.  
  123. 3D  object       An object drawn on a computer screen  which
  124. has a 3D appearance.
  125. rendering      Drawing a 3D object on a computer screen.
  126. OpenGL          A software system supplied by Microsoft  for
  127. 3D rendering.
  128. 3D  graphics accelerator board A graphics  accelerator board
  129. specially  designed  to accelerate              3D  graphics
  130. such as OpenGL.
  131. Help  file      A documentation file which accompanies  most
  132. Windows  applications.              It  contains  underlined
  133. text,     which     when    clicked,    displays     further
  134. information.
  135. Program  Manager      The  Windows interface  for  executing
  136. applications.
  137. program  group        In  Windows NT, the boxes  with  icons
  138. found  under "Program                         Manager".   In
  139. Windows  95,  use the "Start" button to get  access  to  the
  140. Via Nova application.
  141. dialog  box          A box which contains a title  and  user
  142. input such as buttons, and                   input fields.
  143. registration        Paying for a software product.
  144. SETUP program  An application that automatically installs an
  145. application on a                   computer.
  146. Double-click         To rapidly click the left mouse  button
  147. twice over the same object.
  148. Main            The program group that contains many of  the
  149. standard Windows                   applications.
  150. Control Panel       The program group that contains many  of
  151. the  standard  Windows                    applications  that
  152. control operating system configuration.
  153. Desktop        A dialog box which control the appearance  of
  154. the screen.
  155. drop-down list box  A list of choices, one of which  can  be
  156. selected  by  the user by clicking                   on  it.
  157. The  list  has a downward pointing arrow on its right  side.
  158. When this arrow is clicked by full list is displayed.
  159.  
  160. INSTALLATION
  161.  
  162.  On  Windows NT the installer must have system administrator
  163. privileges.   On  Windows 95 this isn't  necessary.   Before
  164. runing setup you should configure your system for 256 colors
  165. or  better.  At the end of the setup process a demonstration
  166. will  be run, the screen saver screens look better with  256
  167. colors,  they  will look MUCH BETTER with  65536  colors  or
  168. greater.  The downloaded file is in ZIP format, it needs  to
  169. be unZipped before installation can occur.  After unZipping,
  170. run  the SETUP.EXE application using either Program Manager,
  171. File  Manager, or the MS-DOS command prompt.  When the SETUP
  172. program   completes   a  program  group   will   have   been
  173. automatically  created.  Icons will also  be  available  for
  174. configuration,  executing  the screen  saver,  registration,
  175. uninstall  and  for reading the help file  and  this  readme
  176. file.  On Windows NT, this program group is local (Personal)
  177. to  the  installer's logon ID.  To make it available to  all
  178. users (Common):
  179.  
  180. 1.Use the File/New command under "Program Manager".
  181. 2.Make  a "Common Program Group" using the same name as  the
  182.   group created by the install program.
  183. 3.Drag  the icons from the original "Personal Program Group"
  184.   to the new "Common Group".
  185. 4.Delete the original "Personal Program Group".
  186.  
  187.  When  the SETUP program completes, if you want to save disk
  188. space,  you  can delete the Screen Saver installation  files
  189. that  were  downloaded to your hard disk.  However,  if  you
  190. wish to give a copy of this application to someone else  you
  191. should  save  all  the separate files which  came  with  the
  192. product,  or  (more easily) save just the  downloaded  file.
  193. Configuration  files  will be saved in your  home  directory
  194. (under  Windows  NT), or the top level of the  system  drive
  195. (Windows  95),  in a directory called "Via  Nova".   Do  not
  196. delete  this  directory or its contents unless you  want  to
  197. delete the entire screen saver.
  198.  
  199.  After  SETUP  completes, the screen saver must be  selected
  200. one  time as detailed below before it will become the screen
  201. saver  which  will  automatically be run  by  the  operating
  202. system.  Use the following steps to select the screen saver.
  203. You  may find it easier to print this document and refer  to
  204. it during installation.
  205.  
  206. SELECTING THIS SCREEN SAVER
  207.  
  208.  If using the "Program Manager" interface:
  209.  
  210. 1.Go to the Main program group in Program Manger.
  211. 2.Double-click Control Panel.
  212. 3.Double-click Desktop.
  213. 4.Under  the "Screen Saver" section of the dialog  box  look
  214.   for the drop-down list box labeled "Name".
  215. 5.Find  the  name "Via Nova 3D Objects Screen  Saver  I"  or
  216.   "Via  Nova 3D SS I" in the list and select it by  clicking
  217.   on it.
  218. 6.The  "Delay" time below the "Name" list box is the  number
  219.   of  minutes the computer must be idle before it  activates
  220.   the screen saver.
  221. 7.If  the  "Password protected" check-box  is  checked  then
  222.   after the screen saver has been activated a password  must
  223.   be entered before the computer can be used.
  224. 8.Select  the  OK  button to exit the Desktop.   The  screen
  225.   saver  will  now be activated whenever there  is  no  user
  226.   input for the specified number of minutes.

  228.  Or, if using the Windows 95 interface:
  229.  
  230. 1.Press the "Start" button.
  231. 2.Press the  "Control Panel" button.
  232. 3.Double-click "Desktop".
  233. 4.Under  the "Screen Saver" section of the dialog  box  look
  234.   for the drop-down list box labeled "Name".
  235. 5.Find  the  name "Via Nova 3D Objects Screen  Saver  I"  or
  236.   "Via  Nova 3D SS I" in the list and select it by  clicking
  237.   on it.
  238. 6.The  "Wait"  time below the "Name" list box is the  number
  239.   of  minutes the computer must be idle before it  activates
  240.   the screen saver.
  241. 7.If  the  "Password protected" check-box  is  checked  then
  242.   after the screen saver has been activated a password  must
  243.   be  entered before the computer can be used.  If  you  are
  244.   not  using  passwords on your system this option  will  be
  245.   greyed out.
  246. 8.Select  the  OK  button to exit the Desktop.   The  screen
  247.   saver  will  now be activated whenever there  is  no  user
  248.   input for the specified number of minutes.

  250. VIEWING THE SCREEN SAVER
  251.  
  252.  The  screen  saver has default settings which  control  how
  253. the  3D  objects are animated on the screen.  Each 3D object
  254. has  it own default settings.  Depending on the computer the
  255. screen  saver is running on, the 3D object may spin or  move
  256. more  rapidly than you want.  As an example, the  teapot  is
  257. intentionally  drawn slowly so that you  can  see  it  being
  258. constructed.   You can change this and other characteristics
  259. of a 3D object through configuration as explained later.  If
  260. you  install  the screen saver on a network server  you  may
  261. want  to  use the "Delay" option to insure that  the  screen
  262. saver  doesn't  interfere with processing  network  traffic.
  263. The  quality of the 3D objects displayed will depend on your
  264. screen  resolution and the number of colors your video  card
  265. is  configured to display.  A video card which is configured
  266. to  display  256 or more colors, will result in much  better
  267. images.   If you would like to view the results  of  the  3D
  268. object's settings:
  269.  
  270.  If using the "Program Manager" interface:
  271.  
  272. 1.Go to the Via Nova program group in Program Manger.
  273. 2.Double-click the "Screen Saver Configure" icon.
  274.  
  275.  Or, if using the Windows 95 interface:
  276.  
  277. 1.Press the "Start" button.
  278. 2.Select "Programs".
  279. 3.Select "Via Nova".
  280. 4.Select "Screen Saver Configure".
  281.  
  282.  Then:

  284. 1.Select  the  "Display" submenu. Select the "Demonstration"
  285.   command.  This will give of demonstration/test of all  the
  286.   3D  object configurations.  While a configuration is being
  287.   demonstrated,  clicking "OK" or pressing Enter  will  stop
  288.   the  demonstration.   The mouse pointer  is  only  visible
  289.   when  it  is  over the message box.  It  may  take  a  few
  290.   seconds  for the 3D object to stop being drawn and control
  291.   returned to the dialog box.
  292. 2.Select the "File" submenu then the "Exit" command.

  294. DOCUMENTATION

  296.  You  don't  have to modify the configuration of the  screen
  297. saver  in order to use it.  If you would like to modify  the
  298. default  settings  for  the  3D objects  you  will  have  to
  299. configure  them using dialog boxes.  A screen  saver  "Help"
  300. file  is available which describes how to do this and  gives
  301. other information, such as how to register the product.

  303.  For  full documentation, including context sensitive  help,
  304. press  the  "Help"  button found when the dialog  boxes  are
  305. displayed.  A "Help" item is also found in the program group
  306. automatically   created   by   the   installation.     Other
  307. documentation  is  found  in the directory/folder  that  the
  308. screen  saver  was installed into.  The default installation
  309. directory is "Program Files\Via Nova\3D Objects Screen Saver
  310. I",  although this could have been changed by the person who
